There is Power in a College Education

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams

and live the life you have imagined

Henry David Thoreau-

Let's Work as a Team

Stanford University in California only accepted around 5% of its candidates this year, making it even more competitive than previous years. Due to the increase in enrollment over the years, over 25% since 1970 and 40% since 2014 among eighteen through twenty-four year old's, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. A multitude of top-ranked colleges and universities saw an increase in applicants (University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, etc). Yale University reported 32%, 891 candidates, Harvard University reported 39%, 494 applicants for the for the class of 2021. Boston College accepted 32%, Boston University 25-29%, Cornell University 12.5-13.9%, Columbia University 5.8-6.04%, Georgetown University 15-16.4%, New York University 27-32%, Princeton University 7.3%, Massachusetts Institute of Technology 7.1%, University of Virginia 27%, John Hopkins University 11.8%, among many others for this past applicant pool for 2021. Due to many public universities not growing fast enough, they have increased selectivity and have seen an increase in the applicant pool because of the past great recession. However, many smaller or less known schools are less selective and even have open enrollment (e.g., Lasell College in Massachusetts took 78% of applicants).

Based on the competitiveness of college these days, even more candidates and families are utilizing educational consultants/college consultants, as well as enrolling into test preparation as an effective means in order to be considered top applicants in the pool. Many students score in the higher percentile on tests such as the SAT's by using test preparation resources and hiring an independent college counselor. Voyage Academics recognizes that there are so many factors that play into finding and being accepted into the right college or university. There are plenty of opportunities and possibilities for every student, one just needs a partnership to make you reach your future potential.

Students today need to look even more closely at high graduation rate, admission rates, and retention rates. There are over 5,000 colleges/universities in the U.S. Many students are also not matched the right college, never finish college, obtain loans they cannot afford and/or pay back, as well as obtain the skills necessary to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond.

Today, there are even more college aged students; children of the baby boomer generation. From 2000-2010, the population of 18-24 years of aged surged from 27 million to 30 million, a 13% increase. From just 1980-2012 alone, college enrollment rates increased from 26% to 41%. It is imperative for individuals to realize that college and a pursuit of happiness is always an option. That is why the percentage of young women and men with at least high school diploma has increased to almost 84%. College enrollment has also risen in all racial/diverse groups as well. However, all of these factors continue to push the acceptance rates lower. In 1988, the acceptance rate of Columbia University was 65%; now it is barely 7%. Many colleges today have evolved and changed how they review applicants. They are not only concerned with a high GPA and/or SAT score, everything and anything is fair game in the college world.

In our global educational world, there are still a lot of popular majors, but it is also essential to find a major that matches your skills/strengths,as well as bring you success in the global economy. Among applications and applicants growing, many colleges are also focused on higher retention and graduation rates. Hamilton College had a graduate rate of 87%, Haverford College 85%, and the University of Chicago at 99%.

Many factors have also contributed to the rising cost of a college education today across all income levels. That is why it is even more important to apply for FAFSA, as well as for scholarships and grants even earlier. According to the College Board, in 2014-2015, two thirds of full-time students recieved some type of help through financial aid, as well as in scholarships/grants. 57 % of undergraduates received grants and 34% in federal loans, and 9% in tax credits, deductions, and federal work-study.

According to a Gallop Poll that was completed in relation to over 90,000 participants surveyed from June 2016-March 2017, they all stated that would have changed at least one decision about their education. 36% would have chosen a different major, 28% a different school, and 12% a different degree. This illustrates the many factors and critical decisions that come into play when students and families make a decision and an investment in their future. It is imperative to create a partnership with an experienced and knowledgeable college consultant that will be an advocate for you and your family in order to overcome all these factors so that you can find lifelong happiness and success. It is important to realize that everyone can find the right niche with a little guidance and belief.
